Step-by-Step Guide
Select the output unit (Words, Sentences, or Paragraphs) and set the quantity using the slider — up to 250 words, 30 sentences, or 15 paragraphs. Toggle 'Start with classic Lorem ipsum' to begin the output with the recognizable 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...' opening. Choose a preview font to see how the text will look in common typefaces. Click Generate to produce the text and Copy to grab it all with one click.
For words: the output is a continuous stream of pseudo-Latin words. For sentences: complete sentences with correct punctuation and varied lengths. For paragraphs: groups of sentences separated by blank lines, mimicking the structure of real prose for layout testing.
Paragraphs = 3 with 'Start with classic Lorem ipsum' toggled on: the first paragraph begins 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit...' and continues with the classic passage; subsequent paragraphs use randomized pseudo-Latin. Total output is approximately 150–200 words across three paragraphs — suitable for testing a three-column article layout or a blog card grid.

What does 'Lorem ipsum' mean?
Lorem ipsum is derived from Cicero's philosophical work 'de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum' (45 BC), meaning 'On the Ends of Good and Evil.' The placeholder text was created in the 1500s by a typesetter who scrambled a passage beginning 'Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet...' ('There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it...'). The result is grammatically garbled Latin that looks convincingly like real text without being readable.
Why do designers use dummy text instead of real text?
Placeholder text serves several purposes in design workflows: it lets designers focus on layout, typography, and spacing without being distracted by the meaning of the content; it prevents stakeholders from commenting on copy that hasn't been written yet; and it visually approximates the density and flow of real prose more convincingly than repeated words like 'text here text here'. Lorem ipsum has been the standard placeholder since the 1500s and is recognized by everyone involved in print and digital design.
When should I use words vs. sentences vs. paragraphs?
Words are useful for short UI elements: button labels, navigation items, card titles, or badge text where you just need a few words to fill space. Sentences work for single-line descriptions, meta text, or short copy blocks. Paragraphs are best for testing article layouts, blog post templates, or any design where you need to see how multiple blocks of text flow together with proper paragraph spacing.
Is Lorem ipsum readable in any language?
Lorem ipsum is a modified form of Latin, but it is deliberately scrambled and not grammatically correct even in Latin — it is intended to be visually similar to European alphabetic text without being readable, so it does not distract from the design. For right-to-left language layouts (Arabic, Hebrew) or CJK character sets (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), separate placeholder text generators designed for those scripts are more appropriate.
Three things most people get wrong about Lorem ipsum
Lorem ipsum has been in continuous use for over 500 years, but misconceptions about it are nearly as old. Getting these three things right will save you awkward questions from clients and help you choose the right placeholder approach for each project.
Myth vs. reality: where it actually came from
The first misconception is that Lorem ipsum is pure gibberish invented by a typesetter. It is not — it is a deliberately scrambled extract from Cicero's 'de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum' (45 BC), a philosophical work on ethics. The passage beginning 'Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet...' translates roughly to 'There is no one who loves pain itself...' An unknown typesetter around 1500 truncated, scrambled, and reassembled it into a block of pseudo-Latin for a type specimen book. The word 'Lorem' itself does not appear in Cicero — it is the result of 'dolorem' being cut at a line break, losing its first two letters.
Why it works as placeholder text
The second misconception is that any random text would serve equally well. Lorem ipsum mimics the visual rhythm of real Latin-alphabet text precisely because it is derived from real Latin. The word lengths, punctuation frequency, and character distribution closely approximate European prose, unlike purely random character strings that look obviously artificial. Unlike actual readable text, it does not distract reviewers from evaluating the visual design — when a designer shows a layout with real copy, the client reads the words instead of the design. Placeholder text redirects attention to spacing, hierarchy, and proportion.
When to abandon Lorem ipsum
The third misconception is that Lorem ipsum is always the right choice. For right-to-left language layouts (Arabic, Hebrew) or CJK character sets (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), Lorem ipsum is actively harmful — it occupies completely different line lengths and text-flow patterns than the final content will. In those cases, purpose-built placeholder generators for those scripts are essential. Similarly, the 'content-first design' school argues that designing around real content from the start prevents layouts that look good with Lorem ipsum but break with actual copy of wildly different lengths. Knowing when not to use the standard placeholder is just as important as knowing when to reach for it.
